Weak UBG throughput on MC5x20H

UBR10k PRE4 MC5x20H SIP-600 Wideband SPA
IOS SG6
rfgw-1d
DTI server

8 DS (3 Primary) from SPA and 4 or 2 US with MC5x20H.
We get speeds of more than 100 Mbit/s in DS and only 1 Mbit/s in US on D3 modem (Arris CM820, Technicolor 7200.d).
At the same time, any D2 modem on these US get 2.7 Mbit/s. There is no load on US.
I can't find the reason.

int cable 6/1/2

CM config file :

for the upstream flow, set max-burst and max-concat-burst to something large eg 28000

For the CMTS :

int cable 6/1/2
cable upstream balance-scheduling
cable up 0 minislot-size 4
cable up 1 minislot-size 4
cable up 2 minislot-size 4
cable up 3 minislot-size 4
cable up 4 minislot-size 4
cable up 5 minislot-size 4
cable sid-cluster-group num-of-cluster 2
cable sid-cluster-switching max-request 4

Consider using 6.4 channels rather than 3.2.
If you do change to 6.4, then change the mini-slot size to 2.

Power-level 15, and power-level 20.
That sounds pretty strange.
Why are you configuring this ?

Upstream Channel : US1 US3
Upstream SNR (dB) : 22.4 33.61 <==== 22 is bad
Received Power (dBmV) : 21.00 20.00 <===== Very high, due to your power-level 20 command
Reported Transmit Power (dBmV) : 50.00 48.50 <===== Pretty high

Probably you need to check your plant balancing and/or headend wiring.
Possible solution is to remove the power-level 20 command and instead put a 10 or 16dB attenuator on your return combiner port, just in front of the CMTS US lead

serykh
Not help

I tried tuning the reverse channel, it doesn't help.
Unfortunately, I couldn't try cable upstream balance-scheduling, only starting with SCH release.

power-level 20 because the optical receiver of the reverse channel amplifies by 20 db. I tried to set the attenuator to 20 and do power-level 0, it doesn't affect. Extra gain is certainly not good.

The problem is only with D3 modems. If you connect a D2 modem at the same point, it shows 2.8 Mbit / s in US. D3 is less than 1 Mbit/s.

SNR 22 is really a problem. A drop in SNR on a single US in UBG can greatly reduce the overall throughput of UBG?

mbowe
2.8Mbit for DOCSIS 2.0 is not

2.8Mbit for DOCSIS 2.0 is not right ! It can be dramatically improved.

1.0Mbps for DOCSIS 3.0 is not definitely not right.

What is your modulation-profile 222. 64QAM?

What is your modulation-profile 223. 16QAM?

3.2width 16qam = aggregate 8.9Mbps available
3.2width 64qam = aggregate 13.3Mbps available
6.4width 16qam = aggregate 17.8Mbps available
6.4width 64qam = aggregate 26.7Mbps available

When the right settings are used on CMTS and in CM config file, individual D2.0 modems can get close to these speeds.
And D3.0 modems will be 2X 3X 4X etc.
Without the tweaks you will be capped at like 2 to 3Mbps max

For 3.2 width, change the minislot-size from default 2 to 4. Important!
For 6.4 width, change the minislot-size from default 1 to 2. Important!

For the upstream service flow, set the max-burst and max-concat-burst to something large like 28800. Important!

For D3.0, cable upstream service flow balancing will help ensure the utilisation is spread evenly across all channels
If your IOS is too old, you should try and upgrade

For D3.0, Sid cluster tweaks allow the modem to fill more channels (important if you are doing 4 channel US bonding)

Your upstream channel power sounds not right
How is your headend wired?
Is it like this ?
node -> receiver -> splitters -> attenuator -> cmts upstream cable

The optical receiver's output is proportional to the optical input. Higher optical input (closer node) = higher RF output.
The receiver will have a built-in variable attenuator, which is used to adjust/balance each receiver to output the same RF level eg 40dBmV
Splitters then may take eg 26dB.
Attenuator then may be eg 10dB or 16dB.
Add this up you are hitting CMTS at around 0 = happy days.

Setting power level to 20 is definitely not normal. You should generally leave at the default 0.

serykh
SNR doesn't seem to be the cause

sh cable modem 4432.c873.ebdc verbose
...
Upstream Channel : US1 US3
...
Upstream SNR (dB) : 26.33 33.61
...

But of course power-level 20 is the reason to seriously deal with US in the cable network.

serykh
Looks like an IOS error.

The last thing I did before:
1) added a second Wideband SPA

2) replaced PRE2 with PRE4
+ replaced wideband SIP with SIP-600
+ updated SCF5 to SCG6

I'll try to find out when the problem occurred.

During this time, the MC5x20 was replaced and noise sources were eliminated. No result.

I wanted to see if the tweaks

I wanted to see if the tweaks had been applied properly

Did you reboot the test modem after applying the CM config file burst tweaks?

US tweaks

US tweaks will give you more speed per modem, but it will increase the network response time. I experimented with tweak many years ago, there were a lot of complaints from gamers.

I have the impression that the old US scheduler is working at 8x2.

Just a bad amplifier

We found an amplifier in the network. After replacing it, the speed was restored in the entire segment. The instruments showed no interference in the US from this amplifier. Until understand.
S/N did not increase after replacement.
Now 8x2 gives 100x20 Mbit/s. (3,2 MHz).
But since we had to check the entire coaxial segment, we decided to upgrade it to 8x4.

Thank you for your help and advice.

About power-level

I think it's just an electronic attenuator.
In my case, the optical transmitter has a gain of 20 (not adjustable) and a gain of 20 in the optical receiver (adjustable, set to -20). In my opinion, this is an extra boost. But i can't disable it.
I can set an additional attenuator -20, but power-level gives the same result, but much more convenient.
In the case of power-level 15, there is an additional combiner for the 8x4 configuration (5x20, two US per connector).
Am I right?

node -> receiver -> splitters -> cmts upstream cable

Not sure this is correct

Not sure this is correct

Does the receiver chip in the CMTS enjoy being blasted by carrier at +20?
And the noise floor will also be hitting the chip 20 dB higher than usual.
That is a lot of input power. Most likely this is out of spec, overloading the chip.

I think it would be better to make the coarse adjustment with eg 20 dB attenuator, and then you can make any fine adjustments using the power-level setting

serykh
I'm not sure either

20 db attenuator will be more reliable.
