uBR10K M-CMTS - SMCD3GN Docsis 3 modem online and offline (flap) on wideband config. Stable on Docsis 2 config.

I have uBR10K CMTS as M-CMTS and on that i have configured 615 MHz channel as primary and two channels on RFGW-1 621 & 627 MHz. When i connect SMC3DGN modem on it, modem gets online through following :
init(r1)
init(rc)
init(i)
init(o)
w-online (Docsis 3.0 mode)
and after 2-3 seconds it goes "offline". again it starts ranging and gets in the same loop.

But when i shut my "interface wideband" - the same modem goes through same steps and finally remains in "online" state (Docsis 2.0 mode).

Can anyone have an idea why my modem keeps flapping when in Docsis 3.0 ? how can i stop that ?

wideband interface

Well, right off, I don't see a wideband interface configured, it may be slightly different for yours, but something like this:

interface Wideband-Cable1/0:0
cable bundle 1
cable bonding-group-id 1
cable rf-channel 0 bandwidth-percent 90
cable rf-channel 1 bandwidth-percent 90
cable rf-channel 2 bandwidth-percent 90
cable rf-channel 3 bandwidth-percent 90
!
interface Integrated-Cable1/0:0
cable bundle 1
cable rf-bandwidth-percent 10
!
interface Integrated-Cable1/0:1
cable bundle 1
cable rf-bandwidth-percent 10
!
interface Integrated-Cable1/0:2
cable bundle 1
cable rf-bandwidth-percent 10
!
interface Integrated-Cable1/0:3
cable bundle 1
cable rf-bandwidth-percent 10

Also, try removing this line, I don't think its needed unless you need to force something:
cable service attribute ds-bonded downstream-type bonding-enabled

Any particular reason you're using a custom modulation profile?

Try removing those lines and replace them with:
cable modulation-profile global-scheme

M CMTS configured..am i doing something wrong ?

hey,
thanks for help.. but i believe i have interface wideband configured and controller modular configured.
i use M-CMTS - (DTI server, Cisco RFGW1, uBR 10k) solution. can u guess what could b wrong ?

Capm
Some options

Did you try this -

You don't have a frequency set in your cable modem profile do you? Also, is the modems firmware up to date? Have you tried another brand/model of modem? Have you tried an 8x4 modem? (I realize you're not bonding 8 channels, but the modems have different hardware/software)

You can't be far off, the modem is getting into the bonding group and coming online, so its got to be something relatively simple.

bhavyang
Sorry CAPM - It was a typo

it was my typo mistake in typing MAC address of EQAM. just corrected it and modems are locked on w-online status.. Thanks for support.
Now i want to know:
- i see some CM with "online" (D2) status and some with "w-online" (D3). I can makeout that w-online is Docsis3 and online is Docsis2 CM. But how do i know these Docsis 3 modems are locked to which bonded channels ?
- When i login to D3 CM and check RF status, it shows locked to primary, bonded1 and bonded 2 downstream and locked to upstream. I need to check same from uBR10K.. suggestions please.

Capm
Hmm

Try....

show cable modem xxxx.xxxx.xxxx wideband rcs-status

bhavyang
i have IOS 12.3.23BC10

This wont work as i run 12.3.23 BC10 IOS.
I have following:

uBR10k#sh cab modem x.x.x.x wideband ?
primary-channel Display Primary Downstream
| Output modifiers

uBR10k#sh cab modem x.x.x.x wideband primary-channel
MAC Address IP Address Host MAC Prim Num Primary DS
Interface State Sid CPE Downstream RfId
xxee.yyee.xxee x.x.x.x C5/1/0/U0 w-online 171 4 C5/1/0 255

Any other way out ?

Capm
hmm

I'm not sure there is a specific command for that information now, it seems to show just the rcc index now, and then you would then derive the information from that template. here is the manual entry for the command:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios/cable/command/reference/cbl_16_show_...

The way I understand it, bonding is either all-or-nothing, either you bond all channels in the template, or it assigns a different template, or you don't bond at all.

bhavyang
something interesting

i m nothappy with cisco page.. nothing on this page applies to my IOS version.

Interestingly modem shows blue LED, its status page shows locked to multiple downstreams.. but above command says ...

Capm
NB = Non-Bonding

NB = Non-Bonding

The Cisco manuals can be confusing because, for example, the update sheets for the 7200 software are all derived from the 10k sheets, their software is nearly identical, but yet, such subtle differences.

bhavyang
CM CMTS weired status

So its not bonded ? why the status is then w-online and CM shows all downstreams locked ?

Capm
Do you have any non-bonding

Do you have any non-bonding modems hooked up?

bhavyang
yep its mixed

Yes. I have docsis 2 modems along with Docsis 3 too. D3 modems were locked to only primary downstream (online - green LED indication on DS)when i remove wideband config. After wideband is configured D2 modems are still locked as D2 (online) and D3 modems turned to D3 (blue LED indication on DS- CM status page shows 3 downstream locked).
