Arris 602s get stuck in init(i)

We have been battling an issue with Arris 602 MTAs for quite some time now. If there is any issues obtaining a DHCP address they get stuck in init(i), which according to the CASA CMTS is:

The CM has received the DHCPOFFER reply from the DHCP server, but the CM
has not yet replied with a DHCPREQUEST message, nor has it sent an IP packet
with its assigned IP address.
If stuck, check the IP connectivity from the TFTP server to the modem. Also check
the CM config file. Use the mirror command to trace the TFTP transactions. It is
also possible that the CM has received the DHCPOFFER reply from the DHCP
server, but the reply might have invalid options for that particular CM.

Has anyone else ran into this, or found a solution for this. We have to actually do a battery pull and reset to get them to come back.

tftp-enforce

By default Casa CMTS has tftp-enforce enabled. This means that it uses tftp proxy. Try to disable the tftp-enforce in interface docsis-mac.

Troubleshooting:

Hi bhalsne, I was reading your messages regarding the issue reported, one questions: as the issue happens only under some circumstances, have you been able to reproduce the issue in a Lab environment?, or have some clues when the issue happens?, in my experience is better to troubleshoot the issue at the moment it happens, of if you can get someone on site at the moment the issue with a 602 arris happens, it will be better to troubleshoot in that moment, to capture traces, info, to troubleshoot why the devices are stuck at that state. Let me know if that is possible, I may help to troubleshoot too.

Cant help you with the CASA, but on Cisco I would "debug cable mac-address xxxx.xxxx.xxxx", "debug cable dhcp", "terminal monitor"

This will dump the DHCP the conversation onto the screen, and I would then look for clues.

If you see DISCOVER, OFFER, DISCOVER, OFFER pattern, then this is a sign the modem is not accepting the OFFER you are sending.

If the OFFER works for some Arris 602 and not others, then perhaps check to see whether they have the same firmware. (What firmware are you running?)

If all else fails and I get stumped with Arris provisioning, I would turn on telnet for the Arris, and then telnet into it from LAN and watch the debugs scroll on the screen. Plenty of different CLI commands available as well to snoop around the config. Usually the answer will be scrolling on the screen though by default.

Can you debug the DHCP OFFER

Can you debug the DHCP OFFER packet that your server is sending to the CM??
There are 3 options mandatory in the OFFER (yiaddr, tftp server and config file name), if none of them are present or are missing, CM will drop the packet and it won't send any REQUEST.
