ubr7246 MC88V Config(Completed)

I have a ubr7246 with MC88V i have been working to replace our old Cisco CMTS with this unit.

I can get D2 modems to connect and dload at 30mbs and upload at 2mbs.

I have D3 modems using Motos 6141 8x4 and i get 50mbs down and 11 up.

I have the D3 modems config file set to 120 down and 30 up. I am looking for suggestions on my config to get me on track.

Looking for any assistance to get these modems connecting correctly.

2/ change all your remaining ratio from 5 to 100

In addition to this :

I would use the more common ATDMA rather than SCDMA. I reckon that ATDMA is more widely supported by modems, and more people are familiar with performance tuning.

DS tuning :

* Add "cable default-phy burst 0" to interface cable 5/1 and 5/0

* In your cm config file, set the DS max-burst set to 4000, more possibly even a bit higher. I find 4000 works well and not much performance difference with higher numbers.

US tuning.... 2Mbps upload speed is often seen when using default settings. With tuning you should be able to achieve much faster. No idea about SCDMA, but with ATDMA :

* If you dont have major noise in your plant, aim to run higher width and QAM. Even if it means less US channels in use. Eg configure 6.4MHz with auto fallback to 3.2MHz. Configure 64QAM with fallback to 16QAM.

* Double the default minislot size (eg with 6.4MHz width, change the default 1 to 2. With 3.2MHz width, change the default 2 to 4)

* In your cm config file, set the max-burst and max-concat burst to 11000

Your suggested changes have been made - I will test on Monday

Thank you for the assistance I will get empirical results on Monday.

Speed results MC88V changes

On D2 modems i am getting 35/3.6 On D3 I am getting up to 92/12.3

So sounds like the remaining

So sounds like the remaining-ratio settings worked for the wideband downstreams.

Doesn't sound like upstream tuning worked. Did you try changing to ATDMA etc? If so perhaps repost your current config, along with example cm config file settings for your default service flows.

changes made D2 modems not coming online.

Cable Modems

In my latest config the D3 modems eventually come online but there is no upload or download. The D2 modem never gets an ip. So my adjustments to DS width and upstream frequencies have broken my modems ability to go online.

So card 5 is feeding a single coax segment ?

You are wanting to provide 8x and 4x DS bonding ?
You want 4x US bonding ?
Are your modems DOCSIS only, or dual-mode DOCSIS/EuroDOCSIS ?

I have a test setup which is

I have a test setup which is a single coax segment. The system that is in production is using D2 modems and D3 modems 4US X 8DS. Majority of modems are D3 Motorola SB6141. We have approximately 120 cable modems on an ubr-7200 with 2 cards right now. We are looking to combine areas down to all ports on the MC88V.

Anonymous (not verified)
You have upstreams > 42MHz,

You have upstreams > 42MHz, wont work unless you have the SB6141E (EuroDOCSIS)

You have upstreams < 20MHz, probably work ok in lab, but usually wont work reliably in field

mbowe
You have upstreams > 42MHz.

You have upstreams > 42MHz. This will only work if you have SB6141E modems (EuroDOCSIS). Won't work if you have SB6141 (DOCSIS)

You have upstreams < 20MHz. Probably will work OK in lab, but usually too much noise to work in field.

So should i reduce the channel width to 3.2 or use fewer ports? With only 125 modems but a high number of nodes (19) which scenario would be the better approach. I would like to maximize available bandwidth for upload. Would using 2 ports on each segment on the card like connector 0 and 1 be a better approach? I assume that i will be disabling connectors in the config. We are approaching 80+% D3 modems? I would have to make more changes to reduce ports. This is the reason i have not put this into production yet. i only expect to add 100 modems to the system at best.

19 x nodes fed from 1 x MC88V

19 x nodes fed from 1 x MC88V ?
Or will you have have multiple MC88V cards.

I suppose it can be done, but if I was you I would be buying a surplus ubr10k with a few 20x20 cards. These are going cheap.

Config File

I need assistance on the config file portion to activate bonding on the upstream. I have the excentis editor and I am at a loss on getting the following into the config file.

43 (Vendor Specific Options)
S08 (Vendor ID) = ff ff ff
S009 (Unknown sub-type) = 03 04 80 00 00 00

I have run all the cisco commands for upstream bonding meaning mtc-mode and it appears to be correctly enabled on the CMTS.

Completed

I thought the TLV parameters needed to be in the config file for US bonding which was wrong it is not required for US bonding. I changed configuration and combined both DS physical ports and put both under the first cable interface and removed from 5/1 and disabled 5/1. This allowed me to bond all 8 channels on my modems rather than only get 4 DS channels per half of the MC88V card. I elected to only use 4 US bonded ports. I also changed cable rf-channel 0 bandwidth-percent 1 remaining ratio 100 to allow the CMTS decide where to allocate bandwidth. THis one is solved.
