VoIP Issues

We are having issues with voice on our network. We have a Pico MiniCMTS200a and the MTA's are connected to a Metaswitch. We only use Arris MTA's and primarily use TM822G's and TM(4-6)02G's. Users are complaining about "static" and this is among several. It comes and goes and we also have frequent issues where we get a SIP 480 response from the MTA. Below is 2 calls to one of the MTA's that had the issue, from the VQM page of the modem. Ask any questions to clarify. Any suggestions to try would be helpful. Also, we are running 9.1.103S.SIP and DQOS is off in the feature switch.

the first thing that jumps

the first thing that jumps out at me is

Upstream Power: 34.0 dBmV --- whats your upstream SNR? Has to be checked at cmts...
with such a low upstream this mta is very susceptible to ingress type noise, unless your return is super flat with a low noise floor 34 db on the return is probably not going to work very well especially with voip.

typically cable plant is designed so that signal from the CMTS/Edge QAM reaches the customer at 0 dBmv and the signal from the customer transmitted at 40-50 dB (we use 45 dB) reaches the CMTS at 0 dB. Your signal of -.8 db should correlate to a 44 dB or so on the return but you have a 35 db, this indicates to me a balance issue.

I would pay very close attention to the the return SNR (from the cmts) and the amount of codewords that are corrected or uncorrectable at the cmts, both indicating return path problems.

We are still working on

We are still working on balancing the plant. The SNR is right around 30-32.

If your DQOS is off, what

If your DQOS is off, what voice classifiers/flows have you setup in the CM config file?

So it looks like you are

So it looks like you are putting SIP signalling into 100k down (prio 5) / 100k up (prio 5) flows

Everything else (internet and voice audio) is going into the default 5M down (prio 5) / 2M up (prio 1) flows

Did you expect the voice audio to go into that 100/100 flow ? The current config won't do that.

At the moment, I reckon the customer's internet traffic is going to stomp on the audio.

If you don't want to / can't use DQOS, then you will need to improve your classifiers to match the audio traffic better.

For example if the MTA audio all goes to a voice server, setup your classifier to match on the voice audio server IP.

Set the voice traffic flows to high prio like 5.

Set the internet traffic / default service flows to a lower prio like 1.

Also that CM config file

Also that CM config file looks a bit strange for Arris GUPI MAC provisioning

These ones should go in the MTA config file :

SnmpMib = pktcMtaDevEnabled.0 true
SnmpMib = ppCfgMtaCallpFeatureSwitch.0 hexstr: 00.01.96.33

Also please note that GUPI MAC MTA method is insecure, and I wouldn't recommend it for production use

You could instead use GUP MAC Encrypted MTA method
