uBr-7256, MC88V, Moto 6120, DOCSIS 3.0 bonded channels lab test/setup

I recently bought a Cisco uBR-7246 with a single MC88V and a couple of Motorola 6120 DOCSIS 3.0 capable modems and I am trying to get my system up and running with the "All in one" setup. I struggled with this because the "All in one" setup doesn't use my MC88V line card, so I had to dig around to figure out how to setup the IP address in a Bundle.

Here is the setup:
MC88V_U0-U3-->4to1_combiner-->40dB-pad-->diplex_flt(low-side)
MC88V_D0-->40dB-pad-->diplex_flt(high-side)
diplex_flt(common)-->Moto_6120(cable-modem)

I can see only a single 6.4MHz wide QAM at 10MHz on my SA and when I "show cable modem verbose" it always has MTC mode = N

Can anyone out there tell me what I did wrong?

My config as of now (modems locked, but not bonded)
Current configuration : 7687 bytes

Welcome to the MC88V World

Quite a bit different isn't it?

Anyways try changing

interface Cable6/0
downstream Integrated-Cable 6/0 rf-channel 0 upstream 0-3

to

interface Cable6/0
downstream Integrated-Cable 6/0 rf-channel 0-3 upstream 0-3

and the same thing for cable 6/1

That should get you closer, if not all the way

Steve-aurora
Helped a little

I see messages that 3 channels turned on, but still no bonding :(
I didn't configure for 6/1 as you said because they are shutdown.

I will keep at it, but I am open to any other suggestions. Thanks!

mbowe
I looked at your config, and

I looked at your config, and it seems about right, so you must be pretty close to getting it working.

I have MC20x20V though, not MC88V. They are pretty similar in terms of config though.

I did notice when I looked at the MC88V docs, in the interface wideband-cable the examples show "cable bonding-group-id x". You dont have this, maybe you need to add it?

If that doesnt fix it, here's some other things to look consider :

* What sort of modems are you testing with? 4x4 or 8x4?

* what does "show cable fiber-node" say (maybe you shouldnt have upstreams 4-7 in there)

* What does "show cable mac-domain cable 6/0 cgd-associations" say?

* What does "show cable modem verbose" say?

Steve-aurora
I tried your suggestions and...

I tried to set the "cable bonding-group-id 1" in interface Wideband-cable 6/0:0 and it won't take the command. I tried shutdown first, send command then no shutdown and it still doesn't show in the running config.

I have 1 SB6120 from Motorola which is 4x4 (I think)

Thanks a lot for helping! You can probably guess that I am no expert in this area.

Check your QoS

I have two suggestions for you.

First is to modify the fibre node to remove the upstreams 4-7 since they arent in use for your testing. I dont think this is the source of your problem though.

Second is to check your QoS settings for the cable modem. In your show cable modem verbose, I see the modem is QoS Provisioned Mode : DOC1.0.

I recall reading somewhere that bonding will not work with QoS 1.0, instead you need to be using the newer 1.1.

The QoS mode depends on whether you use the old-style or new-style statements in your cm config file. I have a feeling the internal config file generator on the CMTS can only generate the old style. Maybe you need to use a proper 1.1 style cm config file on a tftp server.

Credit where credit is due

I just remembered where I read about the QOS 1.0 problem, it was here:
http://www.docsishelp.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=225

Steve-aurora
Sounds promising

I now remember reading that in the beginning and missed it. Thanks for pointing that out. I am going to try setting that up and I'll get back to you.

I just wanted to ask if anyone out there has a DOCSIS 3.0 configuration file editor that they would be willing to email me. I can't seem to find one on the internet. My email is steveh@aurora.com. Thanks!

mbowe
DOCSIS config file editor

Choices that come to mind include :
* http://docsis.sourceforge.net (linux). Free.
* Arris PacketACE (windows). Free, but need to get it from your Arris distributor (requires key)
* Motorola bticonfig (windows). As far as I know this is free, but I am not 100% sure. You could ask your Motorola distributor for a copy. Or if you email me (michael at bowe id au) I can send you the URL perhaps.

Or let me know if you would like me to compile a basic file for you. You could then upload the file into the flash of the CMTS and serve it to modems from there.
