Small Cable Deployment - CMTS 1000

Hello,
I am a senior network engineer with a 20+ year background. I am working with a small cable company (<200 subs) to install a CMTS 1000. I've configured it, set up tftp, dhcpd, and am using our ntp servers. I've gone through many of the configurations here, and I think I am pretty close.

I'm seeing the cable modem make a request at the cmts, and at the dhcp server. I see this at the CMTS..

CABLE: <> DA=ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff SA=00:0c:e5:24:7c:7a
SRC IP=0.0.0.0 DST IP=255.255.255.255 yiaddr=0.0.0.0 chaddr=00:0c:e5:24:7c:7a

ETHERNET: <> DA=00:00:ca:24:02:7c SA=00:04:c0:d7:bc:38
SRC IP=(our dhcpserver) DST IP=(thecmtsip) yiaddr=(theclientIP) chaddr=00:0c:e5:24:7c:7a

CABLE: <> DA=ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff SA=00:0c:e5:24:7c:7a
SRC IP=0.0.0.0 DST IP=255.255.255.255 yiaddr=0.0.0.0 chaddr=00:0c:e5:24:7c:7a

ETHERNET: <> DA=00:00:ca:24:02:7c SA=00:04:c0:d7:bc:38
SRC IP=(ourdhcpserver) DST IP=(thecmtsIP) yiaddr=(theclientIP) chaddr=00:0c:e5:24:7c:7a

However the modem never binds the IP.

I see this in "cable"
[constitution] cable-level# show modem-list
Level to be displayed is 'modem-list'.
Modems list
Modem Mac Address Ip Address DnCh UpCh RxPwr Status
----- ----------------- --------------- ---- ---- ----- ---------------
1 00:0c:e5:24:7c:7a 0.0.0.0 3 5 50 rng-aborted
End of list

I've actually seen this say range-complete, but it still does not get an IP.

So.. any ideas? I've tried installing docsis_server (so close and yet so far) if I could find logs I could probably get it running. I've built a .bin file using docsis, and I know the tftp server works as I can download the file from it.

So what is the cable modem not seeing?

[constitution] remote1> system

ip left off... it's all public

Anyone???

Thanks

still stuck?

I've helped a ton of people on here and free help is good. Pay help is better. If you're ever stuck and need a professional solution from a fellow private cable operator, let me know. It seems like cell phone calls at 10:00pm get the most done. :)

Extra help...

I could certainly use some backup! I got it working, turns out motorola cable modems are picky and have to have ALL of the settings from dhcp or they will just sit and range forever, so the cmts was working fine! I was just going nuts with it, and finally turned on some modem activity and found an obscure help doc somewhere.

I now have docsis_server 3.5 up but it's looking like i'm going to have to write a ton of php to maintain this thing and get info from it. I've checked with some other suppliers that have some nice stuff, but $$$'s or not being able to host in house is not what we want.

I'm working to integrated it into an online billing/support system.

You can reach me at rpoorman at the domain cssnw.com

logs

You say you can't get to "logs". How come?

The CMTS should display logs. Are you unaware of how to get to them?

Actually it's better to show how to do it :)

OK windwatervawes. Go to #event set appropriate levels of logging, set throttling to maintain-below.... and open udp514 on Your linux box. Set ip of linux box as syslog. Set (for the beginning) +syslog at all events. Should work fine. Seems to be RF problem.

next-server

It seems like CM deosn't like DHCP offer.
Have you specified next-server option? filename, ntp server, time offset etc?
