Hi all...This is my first topic and i would like to discuss about this interesting problem that is happening to me.On Interface 5/1 i have some modems which are since 3 days ago in init(rc) state. Here is the cfg from Linecard 5/1:

According to the tests that i have made ,to see
maybe if there is any HF problems, the issue did not follow the modems when i
swapped the upstreams C5/1/3/U4 with C5/1/3/U0 on card 5/1, instead it stayed
attached to the Physical port, which means the issue could be the card but im still not sure.As the
config on the card is the same for all port, i would and would not maybe put higher probability on the card defect, but im still not sure. The IOS is 4 years old and uptime of the UBR is 51 weeks. Those modems which were in init(rc) state are now changed but the problem is still the same.I would be very thankful if someone jumps in and discuss this with me.

signal levels

I am a CMTS operator / network engineer, not a RF tech, but to me it does sound suspiciously like some sort of signal level problem.

RF tech would probably be plugging a spec-an onto the upstream combiner ports to have a look at the signal quality. Or be using their JDSU handsets / sweep gear etc to check things out at the customer premises.

If you are more an IT person (like me), then here's a few things you could try:

Perhaps have someone login to the web page of the modem ( from the LAN side ) and have a look at what levels are showing. Maybe the modem is maxing it's tx power, or maybe the SNR is poor.

You can look on the CMTS with something like "show controllers cable 5/1/3 up 0" and look at the SNR readout to get a feel of overall noise on the upstream.

If you have cable remote-query enabled on the CMTS you can do stuff like "show cable modem phy" to get a feel for the uspower, dspower, snr etc for modems on the CMTS. This can be helpful in spotting problems with attenuation or noise.

I would turn on "cable upstream x equalization-coefficient" and "cable upstream x ingress-noise-cancellation 10" for each upstream. These will help combat any noise problems. Although I might be a little wary of doing this if the CMTS and modems have ancient firmware.

I would try switching to a different upstream frequency, or better yet create a spectrum group so each upstream can auto-select a clean frequency.

You could also do stuff like "debug cable mac-address x.x.x" then perhaps something like "debug cable range" or "debug cable registration" to see if there's any clues.

And it could also pay to reboot CMTS and upgrade to recent IOS. 4 years old is very old!

Hope that helps!
