Modem debugin on 10K, stuck at init(t)

So have been battling to get modem to come online. Currently modem goes from init(t) to init(o). I have tried debugging the 10k and don't see a lot of information. This is the running config. Maybe someone can see something I don't.

failing time of day

I'm not a Cisco expert, but thinking something else is failing here. the modem ranges and moves onto the dhcp server to get it's information and tftp server info. from the modem gateway or source address, can you ping the tftp server and dhcp server? docsis shared secret match what's on the modem file? modem log, what does it say is failing? 9/10 times tod isn't really needed or a show stopper, why I'm asking about the other possible issues because the show cable modem command goes quick as the modems move through it's registration and easy to miss. do you see the file sent to modem from the tftp server via the tftp server log?

Carl

xsimio
INIT(t) is Time of Day

INIT(t) is Time of Day exchange failure. Check if the IP from DHCP Offer for ToD has a ToD server running. If not, you can enable ToD server on the CMTS itself and change the DHCP Offer Option.

bbeadmin
will test and respond

Thanks guys. I am going to try running the TOD on the cmts itself. Found the cisco paper on it. Let you guys know the results on this.

Capm
make sure

make sure your times are right. If the cmts time and the dhcp server time are too far apart, it won't allow it to finish registering.

Update

So I just got on site. Here thanks for the input. I tried a different modem and yeah same thing is happening. I am about to check the time on both the TOD server and the cmts. Also I was pointed to this article on shared secret. http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/cable/cmts/feature/ubrdmic.html#wp1... . I started reviewing it but I don't think I have this set.

Thanks guys

bbeadmin
Update again

So I went through this thing and excluded a modem from the shared secret using the cable dynamic-secret exclude modem . The modem is still not downloading the tftp file.

The modem does show itself moving on from TOD and then attempting to download the file however it never succeeds. I have downloaded a tftp file from the server to the cmts using copy tftp flash command and it succeeded. Im pretty stumpped on what the heck is going on. Anything further you guys can suggest would be appreciated.

Capm
logs

Look at the tftp server logs and see if it shows an error on the transfer, or any evidence that that modem tried to download the file. (verify file existance, spelling, location, etc)

is it just one modem, or all modems, or is this a new launch?

cmcaldas
ping

Sorry to point something out you may checked, but from the tftp server, can it ping the modem gateway?
Thought is it might be different from the dhcp server and may need a route?

Updates on questions

Hey Guys,

Here it is so far. I am able to ping from cmts bundle to tftp server. Our server is all in one btw. From the server I can ping the cable gateway as well. Which is why I am stumped on what can cause the modem not to download the file.

Thanks

bbeadmin
Forgot one question

Yeah this is a new launch.

bbeadmin
Maybe found issue

Guys,

I may have found the issue. The gigabit interfaces was not working. So I was routing everything through the fastethernet on the pre one of the vendors told me that tftp wont work if I am routing through the pre. Anyone know if this is true?

Thanks

Capm
I believe...

the fastethernet port is for management only, so no, I don't think it'll route thru that interface.

Issue found now diagnosing new issue

Hi
So we ended up fixing the issue where the spa interfaces weren't working. After a lot of pulling and reseating and wiping the configuration the cmts started to allow traffic through the ports. We got a basic config inside of it now and have got the modem to init(o).

I see the modem requesting the file however it doesn't seem to take it. Could it be that the file is incorrect or needs to be specific? I have used this file on a casa and it works great. If anyone has a working file that I can work from that would be great.

Thanks everyone!

Issues Resolved

I just wanted to take the time to say thanks to everyone for assisting with this. I have the cmts up and running with a basic setup and put it on a small plant to see how it handles data. Next week ill look into better load balancing and security. The forum posts on here have helped me a lot and everyone's help. Ive read more cisco white papers the last 10 days than I thought I would in a short time frame. Its good to know everyone is here as an extra voice God knows we all need it sometimes.

Cheers!
