I currently manage the networking for a few companies where we get bandwidth from the local isp. Are there any legal issues or regulations that need to be covered if I want to use my own cmts and provide data for each company I serve? I mean, can I just use my own modems that are synced to my server across the public infrastructure?
Perhaps I'm misunderstanding your question but to put it simply the CMTS is the point were IP packets are modulated and transported accross the coax plant via an RF downstream channels. The cable modem listens to this channel and converts the RF signals back to IP. There is an upstream channel used as well where the cable modem transmits back to the CMTS.
So you would have to have you own coax plant between the CMTS and the cable modem or you would have to lease channel space from your cable operator which I've never heard of them doing.
From what I have read it sounds like I could just buy one and plug it in (obviously oversimplified), even from my own home. I want to by pass my ISP and just add bandwidth at a central location and was curious what would happen if I started plugging stuff in to "public" coax. It would make things much more efficient for me... if it were possible?
