Hi all,
i'm going to prepare to invest in a new CMTS system and I'm thinking to uBR10K with line card MC20x20D, but has some advice about uBR10K :
o it is not 100% D3.0 compliant and
o Cisco will planning to end-of-life this HW very soon.
o It might be It is MC20x20.
o The New Cisco CMTS should be investing in should be uBR10012 with the 3G60
such, should be selection cisco ?
Thanks!
Hi,
I think this is a difficult decision without knowledge what kind of CATV-Network should be served by the CMTS.
BUT if you have no strange routing stuff I would recommend any other of the big CMTS vendors => Arris, Casa or Motorola.
In my opinion the decoupled linecards (separate linecards for downstream and upstream) on the Arris, Casa and Motorola CMTS let you the best option to tailor a solution for your network and you have a nice I-CMTS solution with the option of a internal RF-Switch for N+1 if you want.
A M-CMTS with uBR10k, 3G60, EdgeQAM you have a hell of configure in compare of a I-CMTS. If you also want to have full N+1 redundancy you need a external RF-Switch for Upstream protection, two DEPI-Switches and a EdgeQAM with internal RF-Switch for downstream redundancy. In summary: We speaking here not about a M-CMTS, we speaking here about a B-CMTS == Borg-CMTS ;)
Did anyone visit the last ANGA COM Congress and watch the new PRE5? The external interconnect-cable-stuff between the primary and secondary PRE5 looks funny.
personal conclusion: For routing stuff Cisco is the leader but any other CMTS are close. It depends on your IP infrastructure. For DOCSIS all other Vendors looks better at this time.
In the end I believe it depends from the pricing but for this I have no knowledge :)
@Cisco: This are my personal point of view and will not speak for my company which I work for ;)
Back a few years ago when we were selecting our DOCSIS 3.0 CMTS, we looked at Arris and Cisco. At the time the Arris was lacking software features, but it looks like they have caught up most of those now.
From my experience with Cisco :
For a small to medium sized network, a UBR10K with PRE4 and MC20x20V is an OK solution. You can use a redundant 20x20 card plus external RF switch to get high availability. Note that Cisco have some "bundles" available in their pricelist that make the system a lot more affordable than just buying all the parts separately.
For a larger sized network, then you can look at UBR10K with PRE4 and 3G60 / SPA-24XDS-SFP / EdgeQAM
I reckon the break-even point between the two combos above is about 3 x MC20x20V. If you need more capacity than that, then better off to go the 3G60 I reckon.
And if you had a very large network, Cisco have the new PRE5 and 3 Gig SPA.
Thanks !
Hey guys we run the motorola BSR64kHD running Docsis 3.0 downstreams (4 currently) and in the process of migrating some upstreams for faster speed. The motorola product seems fairly straight forward, the support is pretty good. We are cutting edge gear on this.. SRM10G, RX48, TX32(TXPlus).
The config is 'pretty straight forward' but there are almost ALWAYS quirks with the software. (ex: always HAVING to shut/no shut cable interfaces when it should just work and doesnt tell you otherwise)
If you guys have questions let me know, i will provide what i can from our experiences.
