Running into an oddball issue.
In the head end, a 3.1 modem is hitting 229mb max (test modem). Sometimes.
Out at the node we're getting 70 out of that same modem. We're running 3.2 6.4 6.4 3.2 atdma and ambiguity exclusion on ofdma carriers running 48mhz to 80mhz.
We're only getting return through the atdmas from the looks of it.
Just can't figure out *why*.
The settings are identical node to node, ofdm, ofdma, qam, atdma. There's zero difference. This puts it on plant as the culprit, but there's nothing different at the node either from one node to another.
The casa itself shows no errors in the logs.
There's no noise present in our analyzer in the ofdma block. SNR is good. Power is good.

What modulation is IUC 9? 13?
Casa Schedules D3.1 traffic first before D3.0 traffic, so if you are seeing all the traffic on ATDMAs this probably means that the modulation you have on IUC 9/13 is too high for the RF conditions and the modem is dropping into partial service.
This would explain why it works better on 6ft plant as well.
What about modem firmware? OFDMA is one area if you don't have a reasonably new modem firmware you may run into issues.
All the settings look right, at least what you posted.
depending on your hardware you may want to set cable map size to 2 instead of 5 (default) this enables better per cable modem speeds.
When your running your speed test look at the utilization command you should see the OFDMA channel fill up first before ATDMAs (assuming the modem is on its own on a mac domain)
If your still having trouble I would look at the FEC counters, for OFDMA there are several places to look:
per OFDMA interface, per IUC, per modem
it is likely when your running into issues, those counters (i.e. unreliableCodewords) will start to increment, indicating you have RF impairments.
Depending on version you can also look at the MER for the whole channel and individual modems.
you have mulitiple iuc on with an interval of 1 (each interval is 10 secs) so the fastest it can change IUCs is 10 secs. Changing IUCs with multiple-IUC on requires a DBC and round trip to the modem, because Casa Prioritizes D3.1 traffic before D3.0 it is absolutely essential that IUC13 works in any possible RF environment, because IUC13 is where the DBC happens. I always recommend IUC 13 to be qpsk Pilot pattern 4, this ensures that if there is a chance that the vital communications go through they will.
Hi kwesibrunee
can you provide known good working examples for mini slot and icu profiles with interface ofdma 9/0.0 for example? it would really be appreciated. on live plant I too have a few systems with 85Mhz return and have played with both the min-slot-cfg and icu-profiles and they seem to be working ok, but know you've had more experience than I have with these. going only by docs I had created my own instead of defaults, but know could use improvements or overlooked without knowing.
three 64qams @ 6.4, one at 3.2 with ofdma 43-85Mhz on 8 nodes averages 307Mb upload speeds. but really would like to see what you've got working as the number of 3.1 modems grow on the system grows I want to keep it consistent
Thank you in advance
OFDMA settings:
interface ofdma 2/2.0
lower-freq 48025000 upper-freq 80025000
ranging-backoff 3 6
map-advance dynamic 400
power-level -6
power-adjustment continue 6
pre-equalization auto-decision
regular guardband
multiple-iuc
multiple-iuc interval 1
multiple-iuc max-retry 2
multiple-iuc err-threshold 500
iuc-profile 1
no shutdown
Two things about these settings that are probably contributing to poor performance:
multiple-iuc err-threshold 500, this is in 1/100ths of a percent and this tells the CMTS not to switch IUCs unless at least 5% of the total traffic is uncorrectable. For D3.1 this is very likely too high, the default setting is 20 or .02% and I would recommend setting it in that neighborhood. You want the Multiple IUC process to kick in as soon as it detects errors and move to a lower IUC.
multiple-iuc max-retry 2, the default is unlimited retry, I would also recommend that setting as well. Mulitple IUC checks happen at the multiple-iuc interval, intervals (which are in increments of 10 secs) so with the current setting it will only try twice over a 20 sec span to move the IUC down then it will just stay at the higher IUC even with all the uncorrectables, until it hits 5% again and it will retry twice over 20 secs again etc..
You can troubleshoot your OFDMA throughput issue by running a series of commands:
show interface ofdma 12/1.0 stat
in the output you are looking at the uncorrectable count, which shows on this OFDMA channel how many uncorrectables there are
If you find a channel with disproportional uFec > 0.1% you can dive deeper into what is causing it by first seeing what portions (minislots) of the channel the uFec is occurring:
show interface ofdma 12/1.0 fec (NOTE: this command must be run in diag mode password: casadiag)
if all of the ufec is occuring in specific minislots, you can use the minislot-cfg to alter those minislots to use a lower modulation
You can also use the "show ofdma fec" command to see which IUCs are having the most uFec and adjust just those IUCs
and finally you can use the "show ofdma miuc stats" command to see why multiple IUC is moving modems from IUC to IUC, where it is uFEC, SNR or back hopping to previous IUC. this helps you to know how well your IUCs are performing.
With the current settings, it will look like the OFDMA channel is performing well, i.e. all modems on highest modulation IUC, but with the err-threshold and max-retry settings, it will rarely switch off of the highest modulation, resulting in poor performance, because the modem will have to have 5% errors before downgrading to lower IUC modulation-wise, which will result in a lot of packet loss and slow speeds for TCP connections.
Thank you for the response and sorry for the late reply.
I too came to the same conclusion on those two settings after some more digging around. Still looking to get those settings adjusted and making the case to those with the power to make that determination.
I would also be interested in seeing a full up config.
So we've made an adjustment on a node on the config.
We're still seeing the speed issue. I caught a raw data output of the OFDMA being utilized but speedtests are not going over 75mb

The ATDMA and OFDMA both registered, we know they're working.
Set both
multiple-iuc max-retry 2
multiple-iuc err-threshold 500
to unlimited and 20 as recommended.
no change. Still getting 75mb cap----but we were getting 250 early this morning.
The only thing left is "something is wrong with the plant."
