I have a fundamental question on routing in a CMTS. (E.g BSR64000/CISCO CMTS)
Where do the ROUTING protocols run? Is it on the network side or CPE side?
If it is on network side, what is the need for routing since default gateway would be ISP router?
If it is on CPE side I am again not clear why routing would be reqd. ?
Is it possible for routers to be connected behind a CM?
A diagram would be of immense help.

First of all if you are using an Arris CMTS 1000, 1500 etc it is only a bridge so there is no routing at all.
On a Cisco UBR the cmts is the router, and provides the routing, although you can set it up to bridge as well. Routing allows you to divide your network, in our network the CM's are on private IP's, and the CPE's are on public IP's, in some environments the CPE's are also on private IP's.
A router can be anywhere, for example a Linksys / Dlink "cable router" is a router that plugs into a Cable Modem. The customer has an internal network 192.x.x.x that is the routed out to the external (your network).

I am trying to understand the architecture. Lets take the example of BSR64K(Motorola). It's chassis has some CMTS blades, SRM and HSIM. Now my question is this? Since CMTS is the cable headend, all it needs is a default gateway to connect to Internet (from HSIM to ISP), so a static route would do. The specs for BSR64K claim that it supports routing protocols like RIP/OSPF. I didn't understand the need for routing here!!
