Problem with uBR7246/MC88 and EPC3010 - running DOCSIS 3.0

Hello,

I have a problem with EPC3010 modem (firmware dated 10-09-01) that I can not log on to the UBR in DOCSIS 3.0. This is the only type of modem (D3.0) that I have. Modem logs on to DOCSIS 2.0. What option should I activate in the UBR (or maybe cable modem) to run in newest standard?

Here is part of my configuration for downstream:

Problem with uBR7246/MC88 and EPC3010 - running DOCSIS 3.0 probl

Hello Maciej,

As far as I see your configuration is not completed and has a few mistakes.
1. You didn't configured wideband interface (or you forgot to add it to the topic).
2. You didn't configured fiber-node to this Mac-domain.
3. You have overlaping frequencies in the Upsstream direction.

Hope it helps,
Asaf

Hello Asaf,

Thank you very much. Your advice helped me a lot. Now I know under what terms to look for. I do not have configured the issues you mentioned in paragraphs 1 and 2. Overlaped upstreams are connected to different areas.

Best regards,
Maciej

There is a very good post over at docsishelp.com that has a sample config for this setup

What are you thinking about it?
May be necessary to include some options in the modem?
I look forward to your advice.

P.S. Sorry fo my English ;-)

You dont need to put anything

You dont need to put anything special in your cable modem config file for DOCSIS 3.0. Just ensure you are using DOCSIS 1.1 style QoS not the old DOCSIS 1.0 QoS (I see you already have done this correctly)

What does your rcc-template 1 look like? If I was you I would remove that command from int cable 1/0 for now to simplify troubleshooting. You would only generally need such a thing if you are doing tricky IPTV stuff.

Also it looks wrong to me to have each upstream in an individual spectrum group. More likely the correct solution would be to put spectrum group 1 on the main cable 1/0 and then not mention anything about spectrum group on each upstream. The fibre-node stuff will then ensure the upstreams dont overlap.

denis_bykov
My rcc-template 1 looks like

My rcc-template 1 looks like this:

cable rcc-template 1
rcp-id 00 10 00 03 00

i have deleted it from int cable 1/0
i also deleted spectrum group form each upstream, and set on main interface like this

interface Cable1/0
cable spectrum-group 1

But nothing changes.

I have checked that "DOCSIS 1.1 style" is using

DOCSIS3#show cable modem mac
MAC Address MAC Prim Ver QoS Frag Concat PHS Priv DS US
State Sid Prov Saids Sids
001e.6bfd.43ee online 3 DOC2.0 DOC1.1 yes yes yes 24 8

What else i have to do.
I hope to your help.

Best regards,
Denis Bykov.

I am using IOS version 12.2

I am using IOS version 12.2(33)SCE
In cisco documentation said follows
"Effective with Cisco IOS Release 12.2(33)SCE, the cable bonding-group-id command is replaced by the cable bonding-group-secondary command. See the cable bonding-group-secondary command for more information."

So i have performed this command but nothing changes.
Does anybody implemented Docsis 3.0 mode on this version of IOS ?

12.2(33)SCE

Yes I have several ubr10k running SCE, works fine.

I have looked over your config and it all looks pretty correct to me. It's really got my stumped why your modem isnt coming w-online. There must be something we are overlooking, but for the life of me I cannot spot it.

Maybe try
* show cable fiber-node 1
* show cable cgd-associations
* show cable mac-domain cable 1/0 downstream-service-group
* show cable mac-domain cable 1/0 rcc
* show cable mac-domain cable 1/0 upstream-service-group
* show cable modem 001e.6bfd.43ee verbose

And you could try some debug's while the modem is booting
Not sure which exact ones will help but perhaps something like :
debug cable mac-address 001e.6bfd.43ee
debug cable reg
debug cable tlvs
debug cable ubg
debug cable wbcmts
term mon

I assume your test modem isnt running some super-ancient firmware?

rcc templates

Of the "show" commands you posted, the rcc one looks wrong to me

There should be an auto-generated rcc template based on your interface wideband. Or you can override it with an rcc-template (but that shouldnt be required for your testing)

For example on my cmts it looks like this :

show cable mac-domain cable 5/0/0 rcc

These match up with the 2 x interface wideband's I have setup (a 4 way bonding group and an 8 way bonding group)

So I think you should be looking into this more closely. Why are your rcc configuration empty. Are you sure you removed the rcc-template config from your system? In your original post you had this manually configured...

Apart from that the only other thing I can think of is perhaps it has something to do with security being disabled? As far as I remember you dont have to enable security for DOCSIS 3.0, but at this stage its worth a shot

Recompile your modem config file with "GlobalPrivacyEnable 1;"

Also the debugs you posted do not look complete. Try doing the commands I quoted and we'll see if anything interesting pops up.

And if all else fails, have you tried restarting the cmts ?

denis_bykov
So, problem is solved.

So, problem is solved.
I just replaced the modem to Cisco EPC3010.
And modem connects at Docsis 3.0 mode
But i have another question.
On a test stend i performed speed test and got next results:
Downstream speed 37 mbit
Upstream speed 24 mit
Is this speed correct
I expected a bit more. at least 100 mbit at downstream.
What do you say about this.

mbowe
More speed

Is this a lab CMTS? If so :

change downstream modulation from 64QAM to 256QAM
change upstream width from 3200000 to 6400000
then set upstream minislot size to 2

If it's a production CMTS you would need to verify your cable plant is clean enough before doing above.

Also if you have no old DOCSIS 1.x junk on the network, get rid of mixed mode (tdma-atdma) and just run atdma

Also then you can consider setting "int cable x / default-phy-burst 0" plus change your max-burst + max-concat-burst in config file to something a bit larger like 10000

One other thing, when running your speedtests, make sure you use a modern computer with gige interface. Older computers and netbooks often struggle to get good speeds.

Also many CPE routers are a bad bottleneck due to puny CPU. If you need to use a router then make sure its a pretty modern one. Look for units with wireless-N and gige, as that is a sign of a decent CPU.

MaxRateSustained

And dont forget to increase the "MaxRateSustained 30000000;" in your config file, or set it to 0 (unlimited)
