Hello to all.
My goal, as the subject says, is to change the cable modem speeds automatically based on the time of the day. For example 6 Mbps during the day and 12 Mbps in the night (as a simple example). As far as I know, to make this possible there are only two ways:
1)_ Use a very expensive DPI (like a Cisco SCEs).
2)_ Assign a new configuration file to the CM (via the provisionig system) and reset the CM. This is very very (very) rustic but I think that with a little of work it can be done. The main problem would be that the user needs to reset his CM (which is not good at all, specially with the longer times needed by a D3.0 CM to register).
But, recently I found this post:
http://www.docsis.org/node/516
In which mentions that using the ToS field and a "time based" access list this can be done. In my case I use an ARRIS C4 CMTS, and as far as I know it does not support "time based" access list. But, beyond this, can you tell me please if this is possible? Is there any other way to achieve this?
I never read anything about ToS, so, before spending a lot of time reading about it I want to be sure that this is the correct way.
Thanks a lot and best regards,
Mauro.
Yes SCE, or rebooting modems would work
ToS sounds workable, if your CMTS cant do the marking, perhaps your upstream router can?
Cisco CMTS has a feature called Subscriber Traffic Management which I reckon would also allow time of day switching. Doesn't help you with your C4 though.
