I have a Casa CMTS and it's DHCP and TFTP server is a Linux box. In order to reach the internet (i.e. Yahoo.com) I need to use an http proxy address. When I insert this proxy on the Linux box I can obviously hit the internet. However, I am having difficult figuring out how to make this proxy work on the cable side. I see nothing in the CMTS or Cable Modem configuration for http proxy which leads me to believe that its up to the client attached to the cable modem to set the appropriate http proxy address. I have tried setting http proxy on Firefox as well as the client itself (changing proxy settings) but to no avail. Packet captures confirm that the destination port address is not being set properly. Therefore, I am writing to ask how http proxy settings should be applied in a DOCSIS network? Perhaps I am overlooking something very obvious but any suggestions/ideas would be appreciated.
You would have to do either: Transparent proxying, or have all your clients use a proxy. Sounds like a crappy method. what kind of provider FORCEs http proxy on someone ? what happened to just plain IPv4 connectivity
Back in the day we used our border a Cisco router with WCCP -> Squid transparent http proxy
eg http://www.crypt.gen.nz/papers/cisco_squid_wccp.html
But these days bandwidth is so cheap, there shouldnt be any need to do this (unless you had some requirement to enforce / restrict / log access to certain sites)
If you are trying to convert private-IPs to public-IPs, you would be better off running NAT than a proxy.
