dhcpd vs docsis_server

Hi all,

I used to deploy dhcpd with Cisco CMTSs, nowadays I configured a new docsis_server 1.xxx in one customer, and left a existing one in another, with minor configurations made by myself.

What I have been noticing, is that when operations are running smoothly, the two seem to work equally well - with the obvious advantage that docsis_server is far much more easier to setup, update and maintain.

However, it seems that when there are problems, either malfunctions or some misconfigurations, that docsis_server is much more flaky. Besides that, docsis_server seems to have a pechant in case of errors to exaust all the IP addresses, and if you clean the table of the dynamic IPs from docsis_server, you will have a lot of customers with duplicate IP addresses. dhcpd on the other hand at least tries to ping the IP address before satisfying the request.

I also have another case where a CUDA CMTS is having problems with docsis_server, however I do suspect the problem to be in the CUDA side.

What are your opinions of docsis_server? do you care to comment?

Rui Ribeiro

Hello, I think we bought

Hello,

I think we bought are talking about the same problem, I personally never used docsis_server but in terms of maintenance it looks bad. At the current Cuda problem we are talking about I believe that in the cmts configuration everything is ok.

If you notice the gateway in the tcpdump's are correct and the dhcp is trying to offer and IP to the CPE, the problem is I never see the ACK's from clients, since I'm not at that current location I cannot see what the cpe see's. We have already rebooted the cmts and that did not solve anything.
I tryed to decrease in the cmts config the max-ip per cable modem to see if there was any cpe using to many Ip's or something like that, I don't see where the docsis server keeps the cable modem configuration files to have a look I find it strange that only know this is happening.

Traceroute and ping from the cuda and dhcp go to the correct places. Tracing the IP to the cmts route. GYAddr looks good... I don't have mutch time to look into this problem but I'm curious about what it can be.

Best regards,
Fernando Ribeiro
